It is hard to predict accurate electric performance of spoke-type interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) by using the 2-dimensional finite element analysis (2D FEA) due to the end effect. In order to calculate accurate electric performance, this paper proposes a mathematical model of the end effect. Since the axial flux path is affected by motor shape, map of end effect ratio that is defined as the ratio of axial and total flux according to design variables such as split ratio, air gap length, and shape ratio is calculated by 2D FEA. A mathematical model is obtained by the end effect ratio map. Its terms are determined by trend of end effect ratio according to each design variable. To validate improvement, the proposed method is compared to the 3D FEA and the conventional method. The proposed method is more accurate than the conventional method. In addition, error is acceptable. The experimental validation is conducted in the final paper.
