For surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs) with multi-pole magnetized permanent magnets (PMs) in one segment like ring-type PMs, characteristics of the motor must be analyzed considering the magnetization distribution since both ends of the pole are not fully magnetized. For this reason, this paper proposes the equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) for external rotor SPMSMs considering magnetization distribution. The magnetization distribution was assumed to have a trapezoidal shape, and the partially magnetized part is defined as the dead zone. Magneto-motive force of the permanent magnet is determined by varied the residual induction considering magnetization distribution. Then, back electro-motive force is verified using test and 2D finite-element analysis.
