This paper proposes the interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) incorporating the asymmetric rotor shape with the aim of reducing vibration under certain load condition. To make the asymmetric rotor shape, the arrangement of the permanent magnets and flux barriers is modified. By applying the asymmetric rotor shape, it is possible to make the radial air-gap magnetic flux density more sinusoidal under certain load condition. As a result, the vibration can be reduced as the radial electromagnetic force density with the lowest vibration order is decreased under certain load condition. To verify the vibration reduction of the IPMSM with asymmetric rotor shape, a vibration analysis of the 4-pole and 24-slot IPMSM with symmetric and asymmetric rotor shapes is performed under the rated load condition using two-dimensional finite element analysis.
