This paper compares the characteristics of axial flux motors for in-wheel motors. In-wheel motors can reduce thenumber of e-powertrain components in an electric vehicle compared to a central drive system, making the vehicle system more efficient. In-wheel motors require high torque density characteristics due to space constraints. Axial flux motors have a thin structure with a short axial length and a large outer diameter, and have a high torque density, making them suitable for in-wheelmotors. Axial flux motors are divided into different topologies depending on how they are configured. In this paper, three types of axial flux motor topologies are  designed under the same  specifications and their characteristics  are compared. The  same design process was used to select a geometry that met the maximum torque of the design specification and then compared the efficiency and torque density at the main operating point.
