This paper presents a study on high-efficiency performance in an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with a constant amount of PM. Based on a provided conventional single-layer IPMSM, a double-layer IPM rotor design is proposed for improving motor efficiency performance under the same output torque performance. With the help of an introduced optimization approach, the design of experiment, combined with the response surface methodology, an optimum design of the double-layer IPMSM model, is determined efficiently. In the study, the main emphasis is placed on revealing the merits of double-layer IPM rotor design that benefit the torque characteristic and motor efficiency performance. The equivalent circuit method, coupled with the finite-element method, is used in the study for calculating the machine parameters and analyzing motor performances, and the experiment results are also given to confirm the proposed approach.
