This paper performs optimal design of a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) for high precision driving based on the analysis if prototype PMLSM. Thrust ripple is one of the significant causes disturbing accurate position control. Therefore, response surface methodology, one of the optimization methods, is applied to obtain the shape reducing thrust ripple of the protype PMLSM. In the end, characteristic analysis of the PMLSM is mainly based on space harmonic method, and finite element analysis is used to verify the validity of the results obtained by the method.
